COURSE CONTENT FOR AFRO-CONTEMPORARY DANCE CLASS

  1. Introduction and interaction with the students on the types of traditional Ghanaian dances forms.
  2. Warm-up session– stretching to warm up .
  3. Introduction of basic movements of a selected dance form.
  4. Movement breakdown – practical analytic simplification of movements.
  5. Teaching of movement routines- Combination of movements to get a whole sequence
  6. End of class stretches- Winding down by stretching to relax the muscles
  7. Q & A- A five minutes session to answer students’ pressing questions on the type of Ghanaian traditional dance form learned.

Description

Julius Yaw Quansah is a Choreographer, Teacher, and Costume Designer. He has worked with the prestigious Ghana Dance Ensemble, Ntentan Dance Company, Noyam Dance Institute, yaQAle Art Alliance, Centre for National Culture, Ijovudu Dance Int., JB Art Alliance, amongst others. He is the founder and artistic director of the Socharart Ensemble.

Julius is currently the acting dance instructor (Centre for national culture-Ashanti Region). He is inspired by nature, realities of life and personal experiences. He is specialized in the area of traditional dance forms and African contemporary dance. He took a lot of inspiration from the late Alvin Ailey and his dance company. He has 15 years of experience working with professional dance companies.
